Fortysomething Christy Lancaster’s at a crossroads. Her ex-husband, Julio, has run off to Mexico with a younger woman. Her two bicultural children have left for college. Having just received her elementary education degree, she’s desperate to find new purpose in life and rebuild her self-confidence. Opportunity comes when she’s offered a job as a bilingual teacher at an elementary school.
Challenges begin on Christy’s first day, when she discovers that seven of her third grade Spanish speakers don’t read or write. On the playground, she’s confronted with conflict, racism, and bullying between the kids. All her students—the English speakers and those from immigrant families—want to learn a second language, but their diverse backgrounds make unity and a sense of community difficult. And even amongst fellow adults on the PTA, she encounters ignorance and blatant racism.
Then, as if she weren’t grappling with enough already, Christy faces her greatest hurdle yet—a tragedy that shatters her students’ lives. It’s up to her to help them heal. Is she up to the challenge?
