“Utterly compelling, wickedly funny, and achingly wise about friendship, marriage, gossip, parenting, mortality, and the messy, often excruciating business of loving other people.” (Leslie Jamison)

Every month, Sara, Agatha, Daphne, Liz, Josie, and Carolina meet—as book clubs do—to discuss their latest read but mostly to gossip over wine. It's a comfortable routine and, until chaos strikes, "book club" nicely papers over the parts of their lives best left uninspected--the secrets and tangled histories of their friendships, marriages, careers, motherhoods, and more.

But when Josie's husband abruptly leaves her for Carolina, and their lives begin to intersect and come undone in ways they couldn't have foreseen, the remaining book club members must try to make sense of what has transpired. For each of them, this rupture in the fabric of their community surfaces her own private dramas. Agatha is new to Providence and feels out of place; ever-competent school principal Liz must help Josie’s and Carolina’s kids navigate the fallout; Daphne has to contend with surviving breast cancer and handling an alcoholic husband; and lastly there’s Sara, who takes it upon herself to play detective, even as her friend’s affair dredges up old wounds in her own marriage.

Rotating between the perspectives of the various hosts, The Third Street Book Club is a sharply observed novel of marriage, friendship, and getting older, wrapped in a page-turning mystery.
