ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Three stories by South African Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee that capture the essence of his thought.

For the first time, these three stories by Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee are published together in a special edition.

Three Stories—'His Man and He’, written as Coetzee’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize for Literature, ‘A House in Spain’ and ‘Nietverloren’—is the work of a master at his peak. These are stories that embody the essence of our existence.

In A House in Spain (2000), a solitary man buys a century-old mansion in the peaceful village of Bellpuig, in Catalonia, and soon a “kind of marriage” develops “between a man who is growing old and a house that is no longer young.”

In Nietverloren (2002), we visit an old farm near Cape Cod, “a lost Eden” in South Africa and a reflection of how tourism has gradually taken over its landscapes. The owners’ son recalls the place’s history, a magical site from his childhood that modern times have transformed into yet another theme park for foreigners.

“His Man and He”, the third story, was the speech Coetzee delivered during the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature award ceremony. The author imagines Robinson Crusoe’s life upon his return to England and how he follows the journeys his companion Friday has undertaken across the country through his letters.

Three Stories is the work of a literary master at the height of his career and a clear example of the essence of our existence.
