No querían recordar que Francisco había sido un hombre lleno de contradicciones, que había experimentado la decepción y la derrota, sino mostrar a un santo libre de dudas y amarguras, semejante a Cristo.
Pasados los siglos, los textos ocultos empezaron a resurgir gracias a afortunados hallazgos y revelaron a un Francisco muy distinto. No el santo alegre que hablaba con los pajarillos, representado en los frescos de Giotto en Asís. Tampoco el santo que amansaba a los lobos y conversaba amistosamente con los musulmanes, precursor del ecologismo, del pacifismo y del ecumenismo. El Francisco que emerge del recuerdo de sus discípulos es un hombre duro y atormentado, dulce a veces, pero también áspero. Estos testimonios no retratan una sola versión de Francisco, porque cada uno de aquellos autores lo recordaba a su manera.

On the 800 anniversary of Francis of Assisi’s death, historian Alessandro Barbero rewrites the life of the famous saint in all its complexity.
Who was Francis of Assisi? The year 2026 marks the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’s death. Although we think we know him, reality rarely matches what we’ve been told. In this new biography, the great medieval historian Alessandro Barbero unearths the various accounts of the deacon’s life to craft a complete portrait of one of the Catholic Church’s most popular saints.
The earliest biographies of Francis were written by friars who had known him firsthand. However, there were constant discrepancies among the accounts. The contrast between the versions was so great that, forty years after his death, the Order decided to destroy them and replace them with the Legenda Maior, written by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. They did not want to remember that Francis had been a man full of contradictions, who had experienced disappointment and defeat, but rather to portray a saint free of doubts and bitterness, like Christ.
Centuries later, the hidden texts began to resurface thanks to fortunate discoveries and revealed a very different Francis. Not the cheerful saint who spoke with the birds, depicted in Giotto’s frescoes in Assisi. Nor the saint who tamed wolves and conversed amicably with Muslims, a forerunner of environmentalism, pacifism, and ecumenism. The Francis who emerges from the memories of his disciples is a harsh and tormented man, sometimes gentle, but also abrasive. These accounts do not present a single version of Francis, because each of those authors remembered him in their own way.
