In 1941, Remedios Varo Uranga de Lizarraga arrived at Veracruz in the company of the French surrealist poet Benjamin Pâeret, as part of an unprecedented wave of refugees from the former Spanish Republic. The administration of President Lâazaro Câardenas granted Varo and Pâeret political asylum in recognition of their status as artists, guaranteeing them civil liberties and the right to a peaceful life.
