Making a Way: Lesbians out Front, originally published in 1987, continues the work begun by noted lesbian photographer JEB (Joan E. Biren) in her previous book
Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians - collecting sensitive and thoughtful images of women-who-love-women in their daily lives. It is a window into the vicissitudes of lesbian experience-her models are just as likely to be shown at work as they are at home with their partner, and for all the intimacy contained in many of the portraits there is also solitude, frustration, pensiveness--the beauty of queer joy isn't tarnished by failing to represent the reality of queer hardship. Rounding out the photobook is a collection of stories, remarks, and remembrances, one from each of JEB's muses.
