The concise but thorough How to Paint Your Boat by Nigel Clegg, now in its second edition, should help clear up many of the questions associated with making a boat look pretty. Clegg details every step of painting, varnishing and antifouling, from surface preparation to understanding material characteristics to getting a flawless finish. The book was initially printed in Britain, so some of the product brands Clegg discusses are not available in the United States, and likewise brands more familiar to us, such as Pettit and Interlux, are not discussed. However, the practical science behind the coatings and surface materials remains much the same no matter where you are in the world.
