This book uses the notion of "news discouragement" to capture the many examples of how we are regularly told not to use news. While the reasons for why we are discouraged from news vary widely, the combined impact is to instill doubt and/or change our news consumption habits. Drawing on a global set of examples, the book argues that news discouragement has become so ingrained in society that we must confront it head on if we are to understand what news and journalism look like now.
