ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“God is always crueler to his daughters: he lets us be heroines but then leaves us to clean it all up.”

A Coruña, December 7, 1857. The women cigar makers at the Tobacco Factory rebel against the arrival of machines and rise up in an unprecedented revolt. This is the starting point of Lar, a novel told through the flesh and blood of its protagonists: mothers, daughters, widows, older women, and young women ready to face an army to defend their livelihood. It recounts twenty-four hours of a historical event that lays bare an everyday tragedy.

With a choral voice and richly symbolic language, Bibiana Candia weaves a story of motherhood, absence, labor, resistance, and memory, where the intimate and the communal become inseparable. Lar is a visceral work of fiction that claims anger as the only truly human response to injustice.

“A tide of women does not move on its own. Their strength is not like that of slaves, fed by the desire to flee. It comes from somewhere else—from the very roots that bind them to the ground, like trees, like a forest, like stones. The fury of remaining, of staying.”
