The Back Room, winner of the National Narrative Prize in 1978, is at once a memoir, a literary essay, and a novel woven from stories born out of a long and intimate conversation the author holds with herself.
On a bleak, sleepless night, C, the writer who narrates this story (the alter ego of Carmen Martín Gaite herself), receives a visit from a mysterious stranger with whom she engages in a long conversation in the back room of her home. Throughout this dialogue, the author shares childhood and youth memories, as well as personal reflections on the craft of writing, the oppressive condition of being a woman in postwar Spain, and her thoughts on memory, love, and the search for identity.
