This book examines the role that radio drama played in shaping public discourses on listening, memory, and democracy in the Federal Republic of Germany after the Second World War. Its case studies analyze 10 productions from the North(west) German Radio in Hamburg, which served as a center for acoustic collaborations between writers, sound engineers and composers in the postwar period. It calls for a new investigation into theses radio drama soundscapes as spaces where voices, music, sound effects, and silence were mobilized to foster open, pluralist discourse, and to invite radio listeners to work through the multilayered traumas of war, genocide, exile, and repatriation in the aftermath of fascism.
