When Temporary Services compiled the quotes in this booklet for two publications in 2002 and 2007, a lot of artists were starting to work in groups. Groups were becoming the subject of exhibitions around the world. Socially engaged art was emerging in many places in the US and abroad and we wanted to make this culture more visible in its contemporary iterations and historical variations. Artist groups are often short-lived, but these quotes explore timeless issues that arise in group work. We hope this collection provides guidance and inspiration to anyone that wants to try collaborating creatively with others.
