ESP is an important book in an area marked by misinformation, misguided enthusiasm, and prejudice. It is a dispassionate and comprehensive study of psychical research, or parapsychology as it is now known, from its origins in the mid-nineteenth century to the present time.

The subject matter of parapsychology considered here is: telepathy, the apparent communication from one person to another other than through the channels of sense; clairvoyance, the professed power of discerning objects not present to the senses; precognition, clairvoyance or telepathy relating to future events or thoughts; and psychokinesis, the influencing of physical objects, such as dice, by willing a particular outcome.

It is the purpose of this book to examine the experiments on ESP and psychokinesis, paying particular attention to those usually considered as providing the most convincing evidence for the phenomena. In addition, the author examines experiments that are of historical interest or that have been of value in the development of research techniques. Recent experiments carried out in the United States and elsewhere are included together with the first critical assessment of Russian research reported from the University of Leningrad.
