Psychiatry and Mysticism is the outgrowth of three historic panel-symposia on psychic phenomena held at the 1972, 1973, and 1974 annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Assocation at Dallas, Honolulu, and Detroit, respectively. Members of the three panels included psychiatrists and other medical researchers, an astronaut, behavioral scientists, parapsychologists, and research engineers. Papers read at these three symposia plus a few invitational papers make up the substance of this volume.

The book is divided into four sections, the first of which is a compilation of papers on metapsychiatry, mysticism, parapsychology, psi phenomena, telepathy, and precognition. The second deals with the energy fields of man, electromagentism, Kirlian photography, mediation, and biofeedback. Section III includes papers on positive and negative aspects and public health implications of psychic healing and shamanism. The final section considers transcendental and transpersonal experiences (with and without drugs) of nonpsychotics compared to the sensory capacity of psychotics.
